Dr. Kwang-Tsao Shao

Dr. Shao is a Research Fellow with, and just a step down from Acting Director for, the Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica. Previously he has acted as the Director of Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, the Director of Institute of Marine Biology, National Taiwan Ocean University, and as the Chairman of Icthyological Society/ China Biological Society/ Cetacean Society of Taiwan. He currently serves as the Executive Secretary of IUBS/DIVERSTAS/GBIF, National Committee of R.O.C.

He received his Ph.D. from Department of Ecology and Evolution, SUNY at Stony Brook in 1983 and is interested in fish taxonomy, ecology, evolution and database works. He coordinated the 1st marine LTER in Kenting, the LOICZ project at Chi-Ku lagoon, and served as co-Director of National Digital Archive Program. He was integral in establishing TaiBIF and TaiBNET, national portals for GBIF; the Taiwan Fish Database; and links with global FishBase, among others.

He has published more than 130 journal review articles and more than 20 books and has received many research awards in Taiwan. He has organized many international and domestic symposia and workshops, including the 7th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference and the 2nd International Barcode Conference. Currently he is devoting himself to integrating biodiversity databases, promoting sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas or marine conservations in Taiwan.
